One Giant Leap into Cabinetry
We are not a commercial cabinet shop
We are not a commercial cabinet shop, but we did want to help some friends remodel their store and take the opportunity to learn how to grow our passion for woodworking from sellable items and bespoke custom furniture into custom cabinetry. It was a hard several weeks, but was a huge success with MANY opportunities to learn new skills and grow our capabilities. By all accounts it was a huge success. If you want to see it for yourself, head to Bucket List Homestead. Map Link
How it came about
Some friends of ours have a Homestead store they operate on their farm. We get raw milk and eggs and other stuff from them on a weekly basis. When they started talking about a major remodel of their store, we said we would love to help by building the shelving and island. A few text messages and a Sketchup drawing or two later and we were off to the races. Their inspiration was this image.

Inspiration photo
From this image we did a quick drawing and sent back a couple Sketchup screen captures. From there we were ready. 6 base cabinets with hutches, 2 in the middle with a chalk board above and a 9’ island. (Later we would add casters that retract inside to allow it to be moved around as needed)

Final Design
What follows is a series of photos of that project progress over the next several weeks. We started by applying what we know about furniture build and applied that to a series of YouTube videos about making cabinets to build the first prototype (which was close to what we wanted, and taught us what we needed to move forward) and then once we reviewed it with the clients, we adjusted and got rolling. We followed that process throughout. Build something, discuss how close it was to what the customer wanted and then start building it for real. (Side benefit, we now have several new cabinets and shelves for the shop. ;-) )
Final Analysis
We learned a ton. Added to our skills stack and are ready to work with anyone interested in following a similar approach. If you are looking for a bespoke project please let us know. We would love to discuss it with you and see if we can do something cool together.
